Eating healthy food is good for you, says Mayo Clinic nutritionist Dr. Robert Hirsch, but that doesn’t mean you can’t consume too much.
The Mayo Clinic has compiled a list of tips to help you eat healthier and reduce your risk of obesity.

Keep your body in balance.
Dr. Hirsch recommends avoiding foods that can cause dehydration or shock.
For example, if you have a sore throat or sore eyes, do not eat them.
If you have high blood pressure, drink plenty of water, and keep your body hydrated.
Dr Hirsch also recommends limiting calories, especially if you’re exercising, to about 500 calories per day.2.
Eat less processed foods.
Dr. Hisch says that eating processed foods can cause weight gain.
For instance, if the foods you’re eating are made with genetically modified ingredients, you may be eating more processed foods, including fast food.3.
Reduce red meat.
Dr Paul M. Coughlin, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic, says red meat, such as chicken and pork, is often added to your meals.
This is because it is low in protein and fat, which makes it easy to burn calories.
But he says you can also eat whole grains and vegetables.4.
Eat foods that contain vegetables.
Eating vegetables helps you control your body’s weight and is a great way to keep your blood sugar level in check, according to Dr. Caughlin.
The Mayo Clinic recommends eating carrots, lettuce, broccoli, spinach and cabbage.5.
Don’t overindulge in red meat or processed foods because they can lead to obesity.
The National Institutes of Health recommends a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and beans.
It also recommends reducing your intake of saturated fat and cholesterol.
